Planning ahead

Safety planning

A safety plan is a personalized, practical plan that includes ways to remain safe while in a relationship, planning to leave, or after you leave. There is no single right way to do this — what matters is thinking through what works for your situation.

An advocate can help you build one over the phone. Call our hotline anytime at 1-866-423-9304 and ask to talk through safety planning. The call is confidential and no information is shared without your permission.

Things to think about

  • An exit plan: where can you go if you need to leave quickly?
  • A bag of essentials (ID, medications, keys, cash, important documents) stored somewhere safe
  • A code word with a trusted friend or family member
  • How to clear your search history or use private browsing
  • Who can you tell at work, school, or your children's school?
  • Protective orders — we can help you file one
